Just what is the Americans With Disabilities Act? Or the Unruh Act? Both this landmark piece of federal legislation, the Americans With Disabilities Act, and the state legislation that preceded it, the Unruh Act, work to create a necessary and commonsense framework to help remove barriers and ensure every American has access to public and private spaces….Media reports and court records reveal a very few plaintiffs are each filing hundreds or even thousands of claims against small businesses. While the ADA and Unruh Act reform advocates in the business community would argue that unlike other similar laws, when businesses are out of compliance with accessibility rules, there is no grace period for them to fix problems with their properties — and as a result, well-intentioned small business owners are targeted with predatory lawsuits that don't allow them to make changes to their stores or workspaces before they get buried with legal fees.Advocates for the disabled counter that these bills undermine the very purpose of the landmark civil rights law, the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), and harm people with disabilities.YLR host Jeff Hayden, and tonight’s co-host Dean Johnson, are joined by Redwood City attorney Kathrine R. Moore, Frederick Lustenberger, a certified access specialist (CASp), and Tony Han, operation manager at Tai Pan restaurant in Palo Alto.Questions for Jeff, Dean and their guests? Joseph Stalin once said, "it is enough that the people know there was an election. The people who cast the votes decide nothing. The people who count the votes decide everything." Is that true in modern-day America?Tonight we update our examination of our democracy. The way decisions are made; the way we select our decision-makers, amongst whom it now seems a sense of tribalism has divided, in fact, divided the population. This extends beyond the presidential election. Beyond the recent and upcoming recall elections. The divisions between and amongst us have not healed, and one of the most contentious issues we’ve been facing is the talk of election security vs. voter access. So, amongst all this, just where do elections stand? Today? What is the state of elections in the San Francisco Bay Area? In California? In the nation?Joining YLR Host Jeff Hayden is Brent Turner recognized as a ground-breaking activist dedicated to local, state and federal election issues and a Director of Communications for Open Voting Consortium. Tonight’s episode is the finale of our series: Are The Guardrails Coming Off?In our first episode, U.C. Berkeley sociologist Andy Barlow and Amherst political scientist Lawrence Douglas told us that people no longer believe in the rule of law; you told us that you wanted to hear from the people with boots on the ground, the powers that be.so, in our second episode, we spoke with community activists and county prosecutors who talked about the need for a revival of the institutions that hold the guardrails in place: family, church, school, the courts and the community;and last week we continued the conversation with political writer Mark Simon, Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen and Councilmember Charles Stone. This week, we wrap up our discussion with guests who are intimately familiar with the inner workings of politics both locally and nationally.

Two weeks ago, we asked “Are The Guardrails Coming Off?”We got a lot of feedback from listeners who were concerned, frustrated, angry or just plain fed up with such things as “flash mob” retail theft, Random violence, so called “smash and grab” robberies, amongst what is perceived as an atmosphere of rising crime in the Bay Area; they wanted to hear from people on the front lines, with boots on the ground. In our final episode in the series, we want to flip the narrative and talk about solutions more than problems, and where there might be emerging light at the end of the tunnel.Tonight YLR Host, Jeff Hayden and co-host NBC legal and political analyst Dean Johnson, are joined by guests District Attorney Jeff Rosen of Santa Clara County, and Attorney Charles Stone, currently the Mayor of the City of Belmont and a Candidate for the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County, and political writer Mark Simon, who has reported the behind the scenes of Bay Area goings on for three decades.Who better to discuss such troubling developments? Why that would be you, of course.Questions for Jeff, Dean or their guests? Please call, toll free, at (866) 798-8255.
